Kitchen Lighting: Everything You Need to Know

Kitchen light fixtures have to do two things at once: light the work surfaces well - and give the kitchen character. In lighting terms, the kitchen is the busiest room in the house: we cook in it, eat in it, host in it and work in it too. That is why it needs more precise lighting planning than any other room.

In this guide we explain how to build the right kitchen lighting: the lighting layers, heights and distances, materials that hold up in kitchen conditions, and mistakes worth knowing about in advance. The examples are based on our kitchen pendant lights collection - ceramic lamps made with 3D printing.

Three layers of light every kitchen needs

Successful lighting planning is built on a combination of three complementary layers:

  • Ambient lighting: the main source that lights the whole kitchen (usually ceiling lighting). The goal is even light across the entire room.
  • Task lighting: focused light that helps us work. It is essential above the worktops, the hob and the sink.
  • Accent lighting: decorative lighting that adds warmth and depth - especially over a kitchen island, LED strips inside glass cabinets, or focused light on open shelves.

Lighting over a kitchen island: the practical guide

The kitchen island is the natural place for pendant lights - and when you plan lighting for an island, the numbers are simple. The bottom of the lamp should be 75-100 cm (30-40 in) above the worktop: low enough to light and frame it, high enough not to get in the way of the sightline or of work.

Quantity and spacing: over an island 1.5-2 m (5-6.5 ft) long, two or three lamps 60-80 cm (24-32 in) apart look balanced; an odd number usually reads as more harmonious. On a short island, or when you want a dramatic presence, one large lamp in the centre works beautifully. In tall spaces you can combine shades at slightly different heights to create a sculptural arrangement. We gathered all the numbers and spacing - including solutions for a long island and a low ceiling - in our complete guide to lighting over a kitchen island.

No island? How to light a kitchen without a central island

In a kitchen without an island, a single pendant light over the seating area plays the same design role. If the kitchen opens onto the dining area, the light over the table is effectively the centre of gravity of both spaces - it's worth browsing our dining room pendant lights collection and coordinating the fixtures. In a small or narrow kitchen, wall lights add a layer of light and character without taking up space overhead.

Light temperature and dimming: the right settings

For the pendant lights over the island and the table, choose warm light of 2700K-3000K - it flatters the food and creates a pleasant mood. For task lighting under the cabinets, a more neutral light of up to 4000K also works, and is accurate for chopping and cooking. The small investment that pays off most: dimmable LED bulbs in the pendant lights - so the kitchen moves from working light at midday to a hosting mood in the evening at the press of a button.

Common kitchen lighting mistakes

  • One fixture in the middle of the ceiling as the only solution: it casts shadows on every work surface. Always combine layers.
  • Hanging too high over the island: the lamp loses its connection to the worktop and the light scatters instead of framing it.
  • Light that is too cold in the pendant lights: 6000K may be bright, but it makes the kitchen feel like a laboratory.
  • Ignoring the sightline: if the island faces the living room, a fixture at the wrong height blocks the open view. Hang it a little higher or choose narrow shades.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrician to install a kitchen light fixture?

Yes - installing a pendant light requires a connection to an electrical point in the ceiling and must be done by a licensed electrician. If the existing electrical point isn't above the island, an electrician can move it or install a rectangular canopy that bridges the distance. Planning the electrical points is the stage worth settling as early as possible in a kitchen renovation.

Can I hang a light fixture over the hob?

Better not. Steam, heat and grease rise above the hob and damage any light fixture over time - and that spot is reserved for the cooker hood, which usually has task lighting of its own. Place pendant lights over the island, the table or the seating area, away from the direct cooking zone.

How do I coordinate lighting between an open kitchen and the dining area?

In an open space, the kitchen and dining lights are seen together from every angle - so it's worth giving them a shared language: the same material, the same colour family or the same series in different sizes. They don't have to be identical; one clear common thread is enough for the space to read as a designed whole rather than a collection of lamps.
